Overview

In the mist-shrouded estuaries of southern Meridia, the Chenoo peoples live in determined harmony with the bountiful land. A coalition of nine major and innumerable minor groups or tribes, Chenooet is one of the least-interfered with places in the world by virtue of its isolation by dangerous seas and dangerous neighbors. With Lakamha to the north and Hiraaca to the northeast, there is no getting to Chenooet at all without extremely ambitious seafaring or feats of extreme diplomacy.

The lands range from lush coastal coniferous rainforest to broad lowland plains to modest mountain slopes. The closest thing to a capital is the trading town of the Yuquot, a settlement more permanently occupied than any other in Chenooet, and the Yuquot people are prominent and influential by virtue of their control of it. The people of Chenooet are mostly Outlander, but there are a number of substantial minority groups that are also considered commonplace. Most of the clans are a semi-nomadic, moving between multiple fixed settlements seasonally.

The religion of the Chenoo is a pantheistic reverence for nature that combines with a form of ancestor worship and a rich allegorical mythology. Harmony with nature, generosity, and community are the highest-order virtues of their society. Seldom interacting with outsiders, the isolation of Chenooet makes local events of more interest than international ones. A major earthquake in the Sun'a'do mountains to the north created severe damage and hardship amongst the Lilluet in particular in 2012, and changed the course of the Dulamish river substantially.
